Welcome to Mrs. Longo's 2nd Grade 

 

Welcome! I am Mrs. Longo, a 2nd grade teacher here at John Trumbull Primary School. This is my 8th year teaching in Watertown and I absolutely love it. I first taught 4th grade at Judson School and now I am here at JTPS. Some wonderful news- In May I had a new baby boy,Michael! We had a wonderful summer together! Now I cannot believe that the school year is beginning!

I am so happy to have your son or daughter in my second grade class this year! It is going to be an educational and fun-filled year. My hope for this year is to provide your child with an education that will allow them to develop physically, socially, and mentally. My goal is to bring new ideas, excitement, and enjoyment to the classroom. We have many fun and interesting activities planned for the upcoming school year. I will keep all of you notified on events and important activities throughout the year.

WHAT ARE WE LEARNING?

Reading and Language Arts: Students will be busy working on our new Storytown book. We will explore many different pieces of writing and determine if they are fiction or non-fiction.  We will work on identifying the plot of each story we read- characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end. Of course, a major grammar focus will be on writing complete sentences with correct capitalization and punctuation. Our new reading program brings together reading, language, and spelling, which is great- Everything is connected and makes it great for us to learn!

Math:   Understanding addition and subtraction, addition and subtraction fact strategies, place value to 100, Money, Geometry, Fractions, Time, Date, Graphs, Mental Math for addition and subtraction, two-digit addition, measurement, probability, numbers to 1,000, and understanding basic multiplication. The 2nd  grade math curriculum is a blend of concrete & abstract, application of theory, and skills and concepts which will reflect the development of learning. Each child at the 2nd  grade level will succeed at his or her age development.

Social Studies: Communities will be the topic for this unit!

** School store is open every Wednesday morning from 8:30-8:50**

Family literacy bags are being sent home to each child. Please enjoy them, have fun with them, and take good care of them! They will be sent home on a Wednesday and must be returned on the Monday so other students in the class can take them home!
